May 2020 PFCC, Unitary and Town and Parish Council elections
The Government announced on Friday 13 March 2020 that the local elections scheduled for 7 May 2020 have been postponed for a year until May 2021, due to the current and emerging situation around COVID-19. We understand that the necessary legislation will be approved imminently and this website will be updated when we have more information.
The below information was previously published prior to the elections being cancelled and is still online for completeness only. More information will be published here once it is available.
For absolute clarity, all elections in the Wellingborough area due to be held on 7 May 2020 have been postponed, including the elections to the new town council.
North Northamptonshire Council unitary election
On 7 May this year residents in Corby Borough, East Northamptonshire, Kettering Borough and the Borough of Wellingborough will be able to vote for the councillors who will serve on the new North Northamptonshire unitary council.
A total of 78 councillors will be elected for North Northamptonshire – three seats for each of the 26 electoral wards which are based on similar geographical areas to the existing county council division areas.
The new councillors will serve for five years, until the next set of elections in 2025. The new North Northamptonshire Council will legally become responsible for the delivery of local services on 1st April 2021, up until that date (ie, from the date of the 2020 election) the newly elected councillors will serve on a shadow authority that will be responsible for setting up the new council so that it is ready to be operational from 1st April 2021.
