Forthcoming elections and referenda

May 2020 - Borough Council & parish council elections.

Prior to expected changes to local governance in Northamptonshire, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government laid The Northamptonshire (Changes to Years of Elections) Order 2018 delaying the expected elections for May 2019 to May 2020.

Previous elections and referenda

The most recent poll taken across the whole borough held was on 8 June 2017 when Peter Bone (Conservative) was elected as a member of parliament for the Wellingborough constituency.

Borough Council election

The next local government elections in Northamptonshire are due to take place in 2020. We have 36 elected councillors and they are elected every four years, although their term of office has been extended to five years following the statutory instrument referenced at the top of this page.

County Council election

Wellingborough residents also have the right to vote at Northamptonshire County Council elections which relate to the election of county councillors. The next local government elections in Northamptonshire are due to take place in 2020.

UK Parliamentary (General) election

The Wellingborough area is spilt between two constituencies; Wellingborough and Daventry. For details on the MP's for these areas please go the Member of Parliament page. Under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011, parliamentary elections must be held every five years. The next UK Parliamentary elections is due in May 2022, though there are provisions that can be met that may mean a UK Parliamentary election could be held sooner.

Police and Crime Commissioner election

The first ever election of Police and Crime Commissioners for England and Wales took place on 15 November 2012. The next Police and Crime Commissioner election will take place in May 2020.

European Parliamentary election

Wellingborough is represented in the European Parliament as part of the United Kingdom's East Midlands Region. The last European Parliamentary election was 23 May 2019.
There are currently no plans to hold any further European Parliamentary elections following the 2016 Referendum on the UK's Membership of the European Union.

Due to three resignations of Members of the European Parliament (MEP) elected at the May 2014 election, replacement MEPs have been returned under Section 83 and 84 of the European Parliamentary Elections Regulations 2004.

Parish Council elections

There are 18 Parish Councils in the borough. Elections take place every four years. The next parish council elections are due to be held in May 2020..
