Starting a New Food Business

When you look at a premises for your food business, you need to ensure it has (or you can alter it to have):

  • At least 2 handwash basins - one in the staff toilet area and one in the food preparation area
  • Adequate workspace with non-porous, food-safe surfaces
  • Facilities to clean food equipment - you should have at least one sink for food preparation and one for washing up.
  • Adequate storage space, especially refrigeration. It is good practice to have separate fridges for raw and ready-to-eat foods
  • Adequate waste disposal arrangements and storage  facilities for staff changing clothes and rest breaks
  • Adequate ventilation - natural and / or mechanical
  • Adequate supply of potable water
  • Adequate drainage facilities
