Wellingborough Council is now offering people on its housing register the chance to bid for new affordable homes in Great Doddington. The properties, which will be advertised from 16 January, will be prioritised for applicants with a connection to the village.
Work began on the development, on land off Earls Barton Road, last summer. It's due to be completed in March and will consist of eight 2-bedroom houses, one 3-bedroom house, and one 2-bedroom bungalow. Visuals of the development are available.
The development is being built on what is known as a rural exception site, which means it's on land that wouldn't usually secure planning permission for housing. Planning laws allow affordable homes to be built on the site in order to address local housing needs. This is why, in order to be eligible for one of the homes, applicants should be able to show they either currently live in the village, have close family there, or work there. Applicants with a connection to the wider parish council area - which includes Wilby, Earls Barton, Grendon, Wollaston, Little Irchester and Irchester - may also be considered for the homes.
The landlord for the development is Asra Housing Group, but allocations of the new homes will be managed through the council. To apply, people need to be on the council's housing register and active to bid using the 'Keyways' choice-based letting system. The homes will be advertised on Keyways this week and more information can be found on the council's housing pages.
Chairman of the council's community committee, Cllr Peter Morrall, said: "There are lots of villages all over the country facing the same issues as Great Doddington - that there isn't enough affordable housing, or space for housing, to provide for the next generation who want to remain in or return to their community. Developments on exception sites, such as this one, mean that rural housing can be built to make sure that people can keep their ties to their village. People who come to the village for work are also able to settle there and become part of the community. Only affordable housing is allowed to be built on this site, meaning that this development will help to meet the area's housing needs now and for generations to come."
