Council grants to help winter-proof homes

Published Friday 16th September 11

Wellingborough Council is offering grants of up to £20,000 to help householders get their homes ready for winter.

As the cold and wet weather approaches, the council is advising people to check that their roofs and windows are sound, their insulation is sufficient and their heating systems are reliable. Council grants could help with improvements that householders otherwise couldn't afford, as well as helping adapt houses so that disabled people have better access and facilities.

Last year more than 200 householders benefited from grants, which aim to remove hazards such as excess cold, damp and mould, electrical problems and structural instability from people's homes.

Grants are means-tested to assess the ability of householders to pay for the work themselves. People receiving income related benefits, such as income support and council tax benefit, automatically qualify for 100% grant towards the cost of eligible work.

Councillor Peter Morrall, chairman of the council's community committee said: "It's really important that people's homes keep them safe and warm, and at this time of year it becomes even more crucial. We can help financially with things like thermal insulation, or household repairs, or even things like stairlifts or overbath showers. Many people don't realise that this help is available. We'd like residents to have a look round and if they think there are improvements needed that could make a real difference to their homes, get in touch with us and see if they qualify for a grant."
