Anti-litter roadshow returns to town centre

Published Friday 19th August 11

Members of the public can help their communities by reporting environmental offences at Wellingborough Council’s anti-litter roadshow on Saturday.

The roadshow is returning to the town centre after a number of similar events throughout the borough saw hundreds of people reporting trouble spots in their neighbourhoods.

The council's environmental wardens will be near McDonald's in the town centre on Saturday between 10am-3pm and are encouraging residents to talk to them about anything that is spoiling their environment, whether that's litter, dog fouling, graffiti or flytipping.

Previous roadshows have been held in Wellingborough's parks and surrounding villages throughout the summer. As well talking to members of the public about their communities, the environmental wardens have also patrolled the areas issuing warnings and fines, and have teamed up with groups of volunteers to litter pick and promote awareness of problems caused by environmental offences.

Stephen Dunkley, one of the wardens responsible for the events, said: "The roadshows are an extension of our 'no excuses' campaign which ran last year and made real headway in educating people about the issues that are created by littering and other offences. By running these events during the summer months we're now going into communities and making it as easy as possible for people to work with us.

"We've been really pleased with the response so far. We've received lots of information about offences which means we can target our patrols and act promptly and we've given warnings about dog control, issued fines for littering, and stopped motorcycle nuisance. Most encouragingly, we've had children join us to promote our message by giving out leaflets, a group of teenagers went litter picking in Finedon, and in Earls Barton we had a couple of volunteers who took a brush and shovel to clear up glass. The majority of people are proud of their neighbourhoods and want them to be clean and safe. These events mean we can work together to achieve that, whilst also educating, warning, and where necessary fining, those that commit offences."

The remaining 'no excuses' roadshows are: Wellingborough town centre Saturday 20 August, Castlefields park Tuesday 23 August and Bassetts Park Wednesday 31 August, all from 10am-3pm.
