Anti-litter roadshow arrives in town centre

Published Tuesday 28th June 11

Wellingborough residents joined forces with the council on Saturday to tackle environmental offences such as littering and dog fouling.

More than 40 people took advantage of the council's 'no excuses' roadshow to talk to environmental wardens about trouble spots in their neighbourhoods.

The roadshow, the first in a series that will travel all over the borough throughout the summer, was in Wellingborough town centre and gave people the opportunity to report issues and offenders. The council's environmental wardens, supported by two PCSOs, also patrolled the area and issued fines to anyone caught littering.

Stephen Dunkley, one of the environmental wardens involved at the event, said: "The summer roadshows are an extension to our 'no excuses' campaign which ran last year. During that campaign we made real headway in educating people about the problems caused by littering and other environmental offences. Now we want to go even further and make it easier for people to work with us and report specific issues in their neighbourhoods.

"The town centre roadshow was the first of many we're running over the next few months and it was very successful. We had people coming to talk to us about litter and dog fouling on their streets and in their local parks and we can use the information to better focus our patrols. We also issued three fines to people who were littering in Market Street.

"Our next roadshow is in Irchester on 27 July and once again we'd be really pleased to see anyone who wants to tell us about anything that's spoiling their environment - whether it's litter, dog fouling, flytipping or graffiti - so that we can act promptly. The more information people can give us the better, including descriptions of offenders and times offences are committed."

The council's environmental wardens will also work with schools and have had a series of successful assemblies and litter picks at many schools throughout Wellingborough over the past few months. Any school that would like a visit from the wardens, or any community group that would like support with a litter pick should contact 01933 231 939.
