Council leader acts on streetlight concerns

Published Friday 24th June 11

Councillor Paul Bell, leader of Wellingborough Council, has called an urgent meeting with the county council.

The meeting comes after residents of the town told him about they are worried about the impact of street lights being turned off in their neighbourhoods.

Northamptonshire County Council approved a plan back in February to switch off roughly half the street lights in the county to save the authority around £2m. The switch off began in Wellingborough last week and Cllr Bell pledged to monitor the situation closely and react to people's concerns.

Cllr Bell said: "People are increasingly worried that their safety will be compromised and it is my responsibility to get these concerns in front of the relevant county council cabinet member. I think we all understand that the county council needs to save money and that switching of some of the lights is one of the ways they are doing this, but if residents are genuinely concerned that this is unsafe then we have to talk about it some more. I'd like to see if we can come up with ways to resolve these worries. I would encourage anyone who has examples of where the switch off will effect their neighbourhood to contact me."
