Wellingborough Council reassures public over streetlights

Published Thursday 16th June 11

Wellingborough council has said today it will closely monitor the impact that turning off streetlights will have on the town.

The council has pledged to take the matter up with the county council if people's safety becomes compromised.

Northamptonshire County Council approved a plan back in February to switch off roughly half the street lights in the county. The plan aims to save the authority around £2m, as well as reduce its energy consumption and carbon footprint.

The switch off in Wellingborough started this week and the borough council is reassuring people that it will be keeping an eye on the effect this may have, and will act on the concerns of residents who feel unsafe.

Councillor Paul Bell, leader of Wellingborough Council said: "Whilst we accept that the county council has to save money and that switching off street lights is one of the ways they're doing this, we will be taking a very close interest in how this will work in practice. We will work with our local communities to understand the impact of these changes, paying particularly close attention to residential areas. In instances where communities feel that the safety of residents and businesses is being compromised I will personally take the matter up with the relevant county council cabinet member."
