Irchester community clean up

Published Wednesday 25th May 11

Residents in Irchester will team up with Wellingborough Council to tidy up the village on Wednesday 1 June.

The big clean up is being organised by ward councillor Tim Maguire and the Friends of Irchester Library, and the organisers hope it will encourage residents to take pride in the village and use bins more in the future.

The clean up starts at the village hall at 10am and will see teams of volunteers, including school children, litter picking as much of the village as possible until 12pm. Wellingborough Council's environmental services team will also be on hand to help out and will be bringing two mechanical sweepers.

Cllr Maguire said: "Litter is becoming a major problem in Irchester and it's really gone downhill lately. It's definitely time for a proper tidy up. We have a team of volunteers who clean up litter around the village every day, but we want to make this a real community event and get everyone involved. We want to encourage people to use the bins and we hope that by giving the village a bit of a makeover it will make a difference - maybe if there's not so much litter there already people won't chuck more down."

Nicola Holden, Wellingborough Council's environmental maintenance manager said: "We're always really happy to support any community clean up. The council has teams of people that clean all over the borough every day, and we applaud any efforts that encourage residents to use litter bins and keep their neighbourhoods as tidy as possible. Irchester is a village with a great community spirit and I'm sure this will help them achieve really good results."

Anyone who would like to join in and help out with the clean up should meet at the back of Irchester village hall on 1 June at 10am.

There will be free refreshments after the event for everyone who takes part, provided by Irchester Co-op.
