Anti-litter campaign goes back on the road

Published Thursday 19th May 11

Wellingborough Council’s successful campaign to help reduce littering has been extended.

The council is asking people to get even more involved by coming forward and reporting environmental issues or offenders in their neighbourhoods.

The 'no excuses' campaign ran from January 2010 and focused on a different type of littering each month. The campaign finished earlier this year after many months of road shows, litter picks and school and community work, and successfully raised awareness of problems associated with flytipping, dog fouling, general littering, cigarette ends, chewing gum and littering from vehicles.

Stephen Dunkley, one of the council's environmental wardens said: "The campaign road shows last year resulted in a number of fixed penalty notices for littering and dog fouling, and really helped to get the message out to the public that these types of environmental offences are unacceptable and can cause real problems. So now we've decided to extend the campaign and we'll be out and about all over the summer offering advice and information, and getting our communities cleaned up. We'd really like people to come and see us and report any offences they know about - whether it's litter, dogs in play areas, flytipping, graffiti, anything at all that's spoiling the environment. We can use the information to target our patrols, monitor trouble spots and make sure the people who commit these offences know that it's not acceptable and there really are no excuses."

The road shows kick off on 25 June in Wellingborough town centre and will travel all over the borough throughout the summer months. The environmental wardens will also work with schools and have had a series of successful assemblies and litter picks at many schools throughout Wellingborough over the past few months. Any school that would like a visit from the wardens, or any community group that would like support with a litter pick should contact 01933 231 939.
