Businesses asked about economic growth

Published Wednesday 18th May 11

Businesses in Wellingborough are being asked to contribute to a new economic vision that will help the council focus support and attention where it’s most needed.

Wellingborough Council received government funding to appoint consultants DTZ to help them compile the study, which will provide guidance to both the council and its partners in how to use their limited resources to help improve business investment and encourage economic growth. The study will take account of the evolving national economic policy changes and how they may affect the borough, and will result in a detailed plan that will help make sure that action is concentrated where it will be most effective. The strategy will also review the changes to the economic environment in Wellingborough, illustrate future trends, and allow appropriate interventions to be planned.

Nicola Dennis, the council's economic development officer explains: "The government's aspirations are clear - councils, working with local businesses, will drive the economy forward. To do this, we need to make sure we're focusing on the right areas and have a depth of detail specifically about Wellingborough. This means that we are talking to businesses, asking them questions and getting their suggestions, and drawing up a comprehensive picture of what we have now, and what we can expect for the future. We're asking them what makes Wellingborough attractive to businesses, whether or not legislation is a big burden, what should the borough look like in the future, what are the challenges they face, and what role the council should play in strengthening economic development. Based on this information, we will be in a position to identify key actions and opportunities. This may include things such as refurbishing industrial stock to make it more attractive, or better marketing of what we can offer, or putting on events to help people improve their skills."

The consultation ends this week, but businesses still have an opportunity to contribute. Anyone interested should contact Nicola Dennis on 01933 231 983 or ndennis@wellingborough.gov.uk

The draft strategy is expected to be completed next month.
