Charities set to benefit from Waendel Weekend

Published Tuesday 3rd May 11

Thousands of pounds will be raised for good causes over the weekend of 13-15 May, as a huge number of walkers, cyclists and swimmers take part in the Waendel Weekend for charity.

The popular event, which attracts over 6,500 participants from around the world, has a long history of fundraising. People taking part in walks and cycle rides that range from 5km up to a marathon-distance 42km can be sponsored for completing the course, with all money raised being donated to their favourite worthwhile cause.

Sue Bull, events manager at Wellingborough Council, and Waendel Walk coordinator, said: "Taking part in the event for charity is a really easy and fun way to raise money. Participants need to contact their chosen charity to get sponsorship forms and then ask friends, family and colleagues to pledge money. They'll get a Waendel certificate when they've completed their route, and with that as proof of their participation they can collect the sponsorship and send it off to their charity. There is a long list of charities already on our website and we would ask that anyone who is collecting for a charity that's not listed on there contacts us so we can add a few notes about who they are and what they do. It's always good if people can contact us after the event as well to let us know how much they raised - it usually runs into thousands all together, which is absolutely brilliant."

Nigel Mansfield, CEO of Wellingborough Mind, is one of the charities that will be benefiting this year. He said: "Members of Mind have taken part in the Waendel Walk at a personal level before, but this year we're going in mob-handed and more than 100 of us will be walking. We've joined together with other branches of Mind from across the county to do the nine-mile walk on the Saturday, and we've set each member a target of raising at least £10. As well as raising around £1,000, we're aiming to remove the stigma and promote mental health services in Wellingborough and around the county. And of course, if anyone else taking part in the event wants to raise money for us we'd be delighted."
