Local shoppers rewarded with cash prizes

Published Monday 31st January 11

Ten lucky shoppers in Finedon will be rewarded with £50 in cash each after the winners in a window treasure hunt were drawn today, as part of Wellingborough Council’s shop local in Finedon scheme.

Local shoppers had to go around participating businesses and identify an item in three shops that wouldn't normally be sold there. The winners correctly identified items such as a paintbrush in Finedon Pharmacy, a hammer in Harrowden Books, and a clock in David Watford hairdressers. The winners' names were drawn by ward councillors Cllr John Bailey and Cllr Malcolm Ward.

The shop local in Finedon scheme was launched at the beginning of the year, and championed by the ward councillors. The cash prizes are funded by their ward support money. More than 20 businesses took part and all local residents were written to, to tell them about the scheme and the benefits of supporting local shops. The cash prize treasure hunt was an additional incentive to encourage people to visit businesses in Finedon.

Speaking at the launch of the scheme, Cllr Bailey said: "Finedon has some wonderful, interesting and varied businesses. They sell a wide range of products, at affordable prices, their customer service is second-to-none, and their independence makes Finedon distinct. I'm very keen that people support their local shops - unfortunately it is a case of use them or lose them - and I hope that this scheme encourages more people to discover what we have to offer. Finedon has recently lost several amenities and we don't want to lose any more."
