People needed to promote the benefits of swimming

Published Thursday 13th January 11

Wellingborough Council-owned Waendel Leisure Centre is looking for volunteers to become Kellogg’s Swim Champions to encourage people to take up swimming and aquatics as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Training for the role will take place at the leisure centre on 20 January at 12.30pm and is free of charge.

A Kellogg's Swim Champion can be anyone who has a genuine passion for working with other people and can use swimming and aquatic exercise as the motivator to getting more people in their community active. The course aims to equip the 'champion' to talk to their local community group or colleagues to motivate them, find out what sort of aquatic exercise appeals to them and then help them to attend sessions at the pool.

Quintin Allen, Wellingborough Council's sports development officer said: "Being a swim champion is immensely rewarding. It involves motivating people to become more active, and acting as a link between community groups and the leisure centre. People are more aware than ever of the need to live healthier lifestyles, but often lack the motivation or information to do it - this scheme will help more people realise the benefits of aquatic exercise."

Bruce Learner, Corporate Responsibility Manager at Kellogg's, said: "We're aiming to train up 1000 swim champions around the country this year to remind people how enjoyable swimming can be and of course what good exercise it is. For many people, I believe that a friendly familiar face, a structured introduction, or re-introduction to the local pool is all the encouragement needed so that's what we're trying to do with this project."

For more information and to sign up to the course people should contact Lucy Brookes or Marie Moffat on 01509 615441 or 07787180121, or email lucy.brookes@swimming.org or marie.moffat@swimming.org

Waendel Leisure Centre is owned by Wellingborough Council and managed by DC Leisure.
