Raising awareness of antisocial behaviour

Wellingborough Council spent time educating people about antisocial behaviour at an event in the town centre today.

Representatives from the council teamed up with Wellingborough Homes to focus on the various types of antisocial behaviour (ASB) and the ways that people can report them.

Susan Horton, the council's community safety officer said: "We've spoken to more than 50 people today and had a lot of interest in our online reporting system. People have been telling us about specific problems, especially around fly tipping, noisy neighbours and trouble in the streets. We hope to investigate these problems further. We've also had the chance to explain the sorts of incidents we want to encourage people to report, which really means anything that spoils the quality of life in a community. We've also advised people what to do in certain cases, such as making sure they keep a log when dealing with neighbourhood disputes. We work very closely with lots of different organisations and by involving the public in this work we can make a real difference our communities."

Cllr Malcolm Waters, chairman of the council's community committee explains more: "As Christmas approaches, there has historically been a higher incidence of antisocial behaviour and disturbance, usually fuelled by alcohol. Rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour is the highest category of ASB, and although statistics show that incidents have fallen significantly within the borough, there is still the need to make sure that everyone is working together to reduce it further. We want to make sure that people feel safe."
