Extra parking available for Christmas shoppers

Published Tuesday 7th December 10

Shoppers in Wellingborough have been given another reason to shop local this Christmas, as the town centre’s Jackson’s Lane car park is now fully open following the completion of demolition works.

The demolition was necessary to clear the way for a new road to be constructed into the High Street development site, which will eventually feature a mix of houses, offices and retail.

The new road will connect directly to Oxford Street , allowing access to the heart of the site and making it more attractive to potential developers. Planning permission for the road was granted on 20 October and Wellingborough Council was awarded £1million of government funding to deliver the project as part of the town centre's regeneration.

Work will begin on the new road in the new year. There will be occasions during the construction when access to car parking and some residential properties may be altered, but the overall availability of parking in the town centre will not be affected.

Councillor Graham Lawman, chairman of the council's development committee said: "Constructing the new road is an important first step in the long-term development of the High Street site. The demolition works were necessary to prepare the way for the road and, now they're completed, the Jackson 's Lane car park is open and free as normal and there should be no issues for anyone who wants to park in the town. This, along with the suspension of the works to improve Market Street and the additional spaces provided by the opening of the top floor of the multi-storey car park, means that people have easy and convenient access to the shops. We wanted to do as much as possible to help our town centre traders take full advantage of this busy time of year, and I'd like to encourage people once again to come to Wellingborough for their Christmas shopping."
