Wellingborough’s Christmas celebrations

Published Monday 29th November 10

Wellingborough is getting ready for a spectacular Christmas, as final preparations are made to a day of festive celebrations on Saturday.

Live music and dancing, celebrity guests, a very special appearance from Father Christmas, and of course the switching on of the town centre's lights, will make the council-hosted day special for everyone.

The action-packed day kicks off at 10am, with an arts and craft fair in the Tithe Barn, where the perfect Christmas gifts are on offer from artists and craftspeople from across the county.

From 5pm, the Wellingborough Music and Arts Centre concert band will be playing in the town centre, alongside jugglers and children's amusements.

At 6pm the parade of lanterns begins its journey around the town centre, returning to the stage at 6.20pm and welcomed back by Father Christmas.

The award-winning Northampton Omen Street Dancers will take on the entertainment from 6.25pm, before 19 year old singer/songwriter Shirin Sech sings her debut single.

X Factor's Steve Brookstein will then take to the stage at 6.50pm to perform his new single, which is released in aid of the charity Shelter.

Just before 7pm, Emmerdale star Richard Grieve, who is playing the Sheriff of Nottingham in The Castle's Christmas production of Robin Hood will get everyone ready for the big lights switch on. The Mayor of Wellingborough, Cllr Lora Lawman, will give her Christmas message before switching on the lights at 7pm.

Sue Bull, Wellingborough Council's events manager said: "Christmas is great fun for everyone, and our day of celebrations will get everyone in the festive mood. We have so much going on - there really is something for everyone. We hope to see as many people as possible in the town centre on Saturday, it's a great opportunity to get some Christmas shopping done and then stay for the entertainment. Wrap up warm and come and join us for what promises to be a spectacular event."
