The council plans to introduce five temporary banner sites around the town to help local charities and community organisations promote their events, whilst also cracking down on illegal fly-posting.

Members of the council's development committee will hear at a meeting on 23 November about the sites around Wellingborough, which have been put up in response to a number of complaints about illegal and unsightly banners.

The sites are at the main gateways to the town - on London Road , Northampton Road, Sywell Road , Harrowden Road and Finedon Road - and the development committee will discuss who will be able to use them, as well as the logistics of how they are used.

Committee chairman, Cllr Graham Lawman said: "We needed to sort out the problem of unsightly and untidy banners and these sites mean that we're in a much stronger position to take action against organisations that use illegal advertising. We have to make sure they meet planning legislation and they are sited where they are safe and won't affect traffic.

"We hope that local community and voluntary organisations will now be able to benefit from promoting their events at these sites, which will, in turn, benefit the whole community."
