Cracking down on litter outside college
Published Tuesday 16th November 10
Wellingborough Council will team up with the police and Tresham College on Friday 19 November to educate young people about the problem of littering.
A successful education and enforcement operation took place along Church Street in October and students from the college were identified as being the major contributors to the litter in that area. The college was keen to have support from the council to educate the students about the issue.
The operation will take place on Friday from 9.30am-1.30pm and the council's environmental wardens will be on hand in the foyer of the college to speak to the students and take them through the successful 'No Excuses' campaign. The wardens and a PCSO will be patrolling Church Street to enforce any littering offences.
Councillor Graham Lawman said: "It was brought to our attention that the litter on Church Street was unacceptable, so we asked our wardens to carry out a highly-visible patrol back in October. They spoke to more than 50 people, nearly all of them students from Tresham. As a result of this, the college was keen for us to do another patrol, along with educational activity in the college foyer.
"As part of an on-going commitment to cleaning up the town centre, this heavily used area is a good place to demonstrate the work our wardens do, and help people understand why they need to do that work. We also want to educate people about why dropping litter is such a problem. People often don't think small items such as cigarette ends are litter, but it all adds up to making a place look untidy, unclean, and unsafe."
