Swimfit makes a splash in Wellingborough

Published Wednesday 10th November 10

The council-owned Waendel Leisure Centre in Wellingborough is to launch the ASA’s British Gas Swimfit programme.

The programme is a structured teacher-led initiative which provides a gym-style work out in the pool, using the same reasons and motivation - whether it be maintaining health, shaping and toning your body, reaching peak fitness level or competing at swimming competitions.

The first teacher-led Swimfit sessions at the Waendel Leisure Centre will be on Monday 15 November 10.30-11.30am and Thursday 18 November 9.30-10.30am. As an introductory offer the first two weeks will be free of charge.

Alongside the structured pool-side sessions, the programme offers a free online coach, which helps guide participants to their goals, including offering targeted advice, personal challenges, up-to-date news, and ASA expertise.

Quintin Allen, Wellingborough Council's sports development officer said: "Swimfit is an excellent initiative and we're delighted it's coming to Wellingborough. Swimming is often overlooked as a means to get fit, but it can give amazing results - even a gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in half an hour and a fast front crawl can burn as many calories as an 8mph run. It also offers other benefits - it has been shown to reduce anxiety and tension, help with depression, and as the water supports up to 90% of the body's weight it is a really good form of exercise for people with disabilities, injuries and illnesses."

Marie Moffat, ASA County Swimming Coordinator for Northamptonshire said: "We are pleased to be working with Waendel Leisure Centre on delivering the Swimfit programme. They have excellent links within the local community which will hopefully get more people swimming more often."
