Affordable eco homes completed in Little Harrowden

Published Tuesday 2nd November 10

A ceremony to mark the completion of seven affordable homes in Little Harrowden will be held on Wednesday 3 November at 12.30pm.

The homes are prioritised for people with a local connection and are at Rookery View, off Hardwick Road .

Attending the ceremony will be a couple who have recently moved into a bungalow on the development to be near to a parent who lives in sheltered accommodation in Meadowlands. They were able to move into their new home ahead of schedule as they were about to be homeless.

Also present will be the Mayor of Wellingborough, Councillor Lora Lawman, and representatives from Wellingborough Council, Midlands Rural Housing, and the parish council.

Planning permission was granted in October 2009 on the basis of a housing needs assessment. The housing register at the time of the application showed 17 applicants with a local connection. The development comprises 2 x two-bedroom bungalows, 2 x two-bedroom houses, 2 x three-bedroom houses and 1 x three-bedroom detached house.

The houses have been built by White Rock Homes and the development will be managed by Northants Rural Housing Association. Extra funding was given by Wellingborough Council to increase the eco measures in the development, taking the houses to a Code for Sustainable Homes level 4 - which is above current government requirements. The eco measures include a ground source heat pump for each home, which extracts heat from the ground to provide hot water and heating. The homes feature reduced flow showers, low volume baths and flow-restricted click taps. Water butts are also provided for each property, and surplus groundwater will be fed to and held in large soak away chambers before being fed into the local water source. All the homes have very high levels of insulation and the majority of materials used in the buildings came from sustainable sources.

The ceremony's running order is:

  • 12.30pm - Craig Felts, Midlands Rural Housing
  • 12.35pm - David Coren, NRHA, and presentation of flowers
  • 12.45pm - Mayor of Wellingborough, Cllr Lora Lawman
  • 12.50pm - Tree planting
  • 12.55pm - Shared ownership property available for viewing
