Council asks employees for ideas on saving money

Published Thursday 7th October 10

Wellingborough Council employees have come up with over 300 ideas on how savings could be made to deliver the £2.5million the council needs to balance its budget.

During August and September, council employees were asked for their ideas on reducing costs, increasing income, and improving efficiency to help the council meet its financial targets. Suggestion boxes were placed around the council offices, a central email address was introduced, and workshops were held to make it easy for staff to put their suggestions forward.

The list of ideas was put before the council's leadership team last week who considered all the suggestions and decided on which ones they would like to investigate further. The deadline for this period of further investigation and employee involvement is 30 November, and will be referred back to the council's Resources Committee in early January for a decision.

Deputy Leader of the Council, Cllr Paul Bell said: "We are taking every opportunity to work with staff to help us make significant cost savings whilst maintaining high quality front line services for local people. This has been a highly successful suggestion scheme which has resulted in our employees coming up with some excellent ideas.

"We have been looking at all of the council's activities and will be stripping out costs wherever we can to improve efficiency.  The aim is to reduce costs without reducing or stopping services where possible. We have to recognise though that the council does face some difficult choices, as does the rest of the public sector."
