The start of a development of 16 affordable homes in Castle Street , Wellingborough, was marked by a ceremony on Monday 4 October.

The site for the development formerly housed two detached properties, both of which were in a poor state of repair. The project will deliver five houses arranged as a terrace and eleven flats for general needs affordable rent. There will be a fully wheelchair accessible unit and two further ground floor mobility units.

The building is designed to reflect the scale of buildings in the area in order to maintain and enhance the character of Castle Street , and will use a palette of natural sustainable materials which complement those found locally.

The scheme is being built by Metropolitan Housing Partnership (MHP) in partnership with Wellingborough Council and, once complete will be managed by Granta Housing Society. It is the first development in the borough for MHP.

The ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Wellingborough, Councillor Lora Lawman, as well as senior representatives from Wellingborough Council and MHP.

Councillor Lawman said: "I'm really pleased to welcome this first development with Metropolitan Housing Partnership, which will provide much-needed rented accommodation for local people."

Yvonne Harrison, Development Director, Commercial and Special Projects at MHP said: "We are delighted to be working with Wellingborough Council and the Homes and Communities Agency to deliver 16 affordable homes for local people. We hope this will be the first of many new developments in the borough delivering sustainable and affordable homes for the future."
