Glass now accepted in household recycling bins
Published Monday 4th October 10
Wellingborough Council is making it even easier for people to recycle, by accepting glass bottles and jars in each household’s green recycling bin.
Wellingborough's recycling rate has increased significantly from 10% to 36% since the introduction of the three bin system, but previously residents who wished to recycle glass had to use one of the 27 glass banks around the borough. With the introduction of kerbside glass recycling collections it is hoped that the recycling rate will increase even further and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
Green bins are emptied fortnightly and residents can now put a range of recyclable materials in them. These include: glass bottles and jars (such as alcohol bottles, food jars), newspapers, magazines, cardboard, aluminium and steel cans and tins, metal lids from jars, and all plastic bottles (such as milk bottles, juice bottles, washing up liquid bottles and shampoo bottles). Residents also have a brown bin for garden waste and a black bin for general household rubbish that can't be recycled.
Councillor Malcolm Waters said: "This is excellent news for people in Wellingborough. I know that residents are keen to recycle as much as possible and we want to make it as easy as we can for them. Accepting glass recycling in the green bins is something that residents have wanted for a long time and I'm hopeful that by introducing this service we will continue to improve our recycling rate and reduce the amount of rubbish we send to landfill."
Glass recycling will be accepted from the first week of October and residents should receive information about the new service over the next few weeks. If anyone has any questions or would like more information, they should contact Wellingborough Council on 01933 229 777 or look at the waste and recycling pages on the website www.wellingborough.gov.uk.
