Opticians wins best dressed shop window
Published Wednesday 29th September 10
At Saturday's street party in Wellingborough, family-run business Halsey Opticians won the prize for best-dressed window.
Shops along Sheep Street and Silver Street had been invited to dress their windows in keeping with the circus theme of the party, with a prize of two weeks' radio advertising for the winner. The competition and prize were organised by Wellingborough Council, and the Mayor of Wellingborough, Cllr Lora Lawman, judged the competition.
Councillor Lawman congratulated winner Daryl Halsey on the shop's effort by saying: "It looks fantastic, you've done very well", and said she hoped the advertising offered as the prize would make a difference to them. The Mayor also commended the shop for the amount of effort they put in, as well as the how good the finished result was. They had a circus banner made, decorated mannequin heads as clowns, and filled much of the windows with balloons, banners and bunting. They also dressed up as clowns themselves and gave away free children's sunglasses to passers-by.
Daryl was delighted to be told the shop had won, and explained how they came up with the window: "We've all been thinking of ideas and looking at party websites for inspiration. It was actually my receptionist who dressed the window and she'll be so pleased to hear that we won."
The street party was organised by Wellingborough Council and highways contractors MGWSP and was held to celebrate the opening of Sheep Street and Silver Street after five months of improvement works.
