Free swimming set to continue
Published Thursday 2nd September 10
Wellingborough’s council-owned Waendel Leisure Centre has pledged to help families by continuing free swimming for under 8s* for a trial period.
Government cuts meant funding was withdrawn in the summer for the free swimming scheme for under 16s and over 60s, leaving many people disappointed.
However, Waendel Leisure Centre which is owned by Wellingborough Council and managed by DC Leisure - have through their partnership agreement committed to provide free swimming for under 8s for a trial period from 1 September to 31 December 2010. If it's successful, DC Leisure will consider the potential of making the scheme permanent.
Centre manager Simon Churchman said: "DC Leisure is committed to improving and developing a healthy lifestyle within the community. This is a fantastic opportunity for those children who enjoyed getting fit and having fun through the government's free swimming initiative to be able to continue to use Waendel Leisure Centre swimming pool free of charge."
Councillor Malcolm Waters, Chairman of Wellingborough Council's Community Committee said: "This is both great news and great value for families. I would urge people to come along with their kids and have some cut-price fun at the pool."
*Terms and conditions apply. As per existing policy, any children under 8 years must be accompanied by a participating adult.
