Town centre clean up!

Published Thursday 16th September 10

Wellingborough Council is joining forces with volunteers from McDonald’s and Wellingborough Rugby Club to clean up the town centre on Wednesday 22 September.

The clean up coincides with the completion of the improvement works in Sheep Street and Silver Street and will help get the town ready for the end-of-works street party on 25 September. More than 40 volunteers will be litter picking, sweeping footpaths, removing weeds and cleaning street furniture throughout the whole town centre as part of Keep Britain Tidy's annual 'Big Tidy Up'.

The council's 'No Excuses' litter campaign roadshow will be coordinating the event on the day, and has secured funding for the purchase of brooms, shovels, and gloves which will also be available for future clean ups.

Businesses in the town centre are also being asked to take part by cleaning their shop fronts, windows and fascia boards.

Councillor Malcolm Waters, chairman of Wellingborough Council's community committee, said: "We are delighted to be working with so many volunteers to tidy up the town centre, and we hope to get a lot done. Our amenities staff are carrying out a cleaning audit, which means they have a good look round to see what needs doing and which areas to concentrate on, and then we can ask the volunteers to work where it's most needed.

"We have a lovely town centre and we want it to look its best."

The volunteers will join Wellingborough councillors for a photo opportunity at 4.45pm in the town centre outside McDonald's

The clean up runs from 4.30pm - 7pm
