Borough Council of Wellingborough

Severe Weather Update

Published Monday 22nd February 10

Wellingborough Council is continuing to implement its snow plan to keep the borough moving during the latest bout of severe weather.

Latest refuse news:
At 7.30am this morning the council's street cleansing crews were deployed to empty litter bins in the borough.

Refuse collectors were out in the villages today catching up on Friday's recycling rounds. Unfortunately due to the crews having a number of slips and falls the collections have had to be stopped on health and safety grounds. Any green bins not collected today will now wait until the next scheduled collection date - Friday 5 March - and any additional recycling will be collected then if it is placed next to the bin in a clear plastic sack (not black bags). Normal black bin collections will resume tomorrow.

Latest snow news:
The council's areas of responsibility have been checked and it's been confirmed that grit put down on Friday is still working in places, although not to its full potential due to a thin layer of snow falling on top of the grit. The gritted areas need activity - traffic, footfall - to work properly. For this reason, BCW workers won't be manually sweeping the areas where the snow has fallen as this would sweep the grit away.

Grit was spread at Doddington Road Cemetery to allow safe public access and to assist with a funeral this morning.

Northamptonshire County Council has confirmed that their suppliers have not been gritting in Wellingborough town centre today, therefore Wellingborough Council has sent crews in to check the pathways through town.

Of the six tonnes of grit we had stored at the depot, we have used five tonnes. We are able to pick up a further three tonnes tomorrow morning, but grit will still have to be conserved for areas of greatest need.

The weather forecast states that snow will turn to rain and this will assist the natural melting process. Wellingborough Council will continue to monitor the weather and act accordingly. We will also keep in close contact with the county council regarding replenishment of grit stock.
