Bike skills centre is a planning possibility

Published Monday 2nd November 09

Bike skills centre is a planning possibility Wellingborough Council is to look at a plan for an off road motor bike education centre on the town’s Park Farm Industrial Estate.

The planned centre would be at Shaw Close and would offer 12-week courses to young bikers, with certificates to work for at the end.  The site would operate only in daylight and there would be no artificial light.  Courses would be run by 90-One Education, a leading provider of road safety education and comprehensive training courses for motor cyclists.
Courses would also cover motor cycle maintenance and would provide fully silenced 125 cc bikes.

Cllr Thomas Pursglove, the Borough Council's Lead Advisor for Young People, commented: "Motorcycle nuisance blights many of the communities within Wellingborough, and councillors and the Police are inundated with complaints about illegal riding on public open spaces and footpaths.  This project is essential if we are going to alleviate this unacceptable nuisance, and is the product of ongoing discussions between the Council and its partners.

"The Shaw Close site is away from residential areas, located in an area where companies operate 24 hours a day, meaning there will be no additional noise, and the bikes that would be used would be fully silenced.  The project would be supervised by trained professionals within set hours and the young people, themselves, would be jointly responsible for the operation and maintenance of the site.  This is an opportunity to put an end to motorcycle nuisance and have a zero tolerance approach to illegal riding, as there will simply no longer be any excuse."
