New mosaics are strictly for the birds

Published Tuesday 27th October 09

A new image for the square at Wellingborough’s Hemmingwell Estate has been inspired by the names of local streets and roads.

Community artist in residence, Kay Aplin, has spent the summer working with children from Oakway and Hatton Schools and members of the Nest Farm Youth Group to design and create mosaics for the square in front of the estate shops.  The theme of the mosaics is the birds after which the Nest Lane roads were named.

Paula Armstrong, Wellingborough Council's Arts Development Officer, said the project was funded by the Council and was designed to help people feel more positive about their area.

"The project is an important part of the work being undertaken by a partnership of community organisations and public agencies with the aim of improving the area.  The residency aims to improve the feel of the area by adding colour and texture and making visitors feel more positive.  It will give the community the opportunity to consider the space, what it's used for and what they would like to see there, and the chance to contribute to the artwork and leave their mark long after the project is completed."
