Council has a Big Tidy Up

Published Thursday 10th September 09

Wellingborough’s Croyland Gardens were treated to a big tidy up when the Mayor and other councillors joined staff on an organised litter pick.

Armed with gloves, sacks and litter-pickers, Cllr Peter Morrall led the Council's clean-up.  The event was timed to coincide with the London launch of Keep Britain Tidy's Big Tidy Up campaign, which aims to collect 500,000 sacks of litter nationwide in a year.

The Mayor said he hoped everyone would get the message and keep their environment clean and tidy by using the litter bins provided or by taking their litter home with them.  "Litter is a major problem.  People who throw litter out of their cars or just drop it in the street need to be aware that there are penalties if they are caught. As council tax payers, they are also paying the Council to clean up after them when we could be spending their council tax on much nicer things."

Nicola Holden, Council Environmental Maintenance Manager, added: "We are very much aware that we are following the example and efforts of other groups of volunteers and individuals who have given up their time to tidy up their town.  The Council can offer the loan of litter-picking equipment and sack collection and support for any other groups who want to help improve the environment.  After all, it's everyone's responsibility to Keep Wellingborough Tidy."
