North of Wellingborough is to be redeveloped to allow for the creation of new homes, infrastructure and community facilities.
The ownership of the land to the North of Niort Way, Wellingborough has officially transferred from the Borough Council of Wellingborough to Northants LLP.
Planning permission for the urban extension to the North of Wellingborough Town Centre was originally granted in 2010. This includes a development of 3,000 dwellings of mixed style and sizes and affordable homes. There will be businesses, a neighbour centre including retail, community, leisure and education facilities, as well as open space.
The land which will form part of the first phase of the development, is 40 acres in size. It was sold for £10m and the council will invest capital into in a number of developments and projects across the borough which will continue to promote high quality growth in the town and provide improved facilities for residents and visitors. Work has already started on the infrastructure for the new development.
The biggest scheme which will benefit from additional funding will be the refurbishment of the Swansgate multi-story car park, which will continue to support the council’s pledge to improve the town centre. The council is currently working on a scheme that can be put to the market to procure a contractor to deliver the improvements.
The council is working with Homes England, as funder of the site, to ensure that the redevelopment of this area meets local demand.
Leader of the Borough Council of Wellingborough, Cllr Martin Griffiths, said: “The development will contribute a lot for the borough over the forthcoming years. Capital funding will be invested into the town centre and additional homes will provide much needed affordable properties for our residents.
“Glenvale Park will offer a wide range of amenities, including two primary schools, sports facilities, three community centres and green spaces. This is a really exciting time for Wellingborough as we continue to grow and prosper.”
