Councillors at the Borough Council of Wellingborough resolved to adopt the Plan for the Borough of Wellingborough (PBW) at a full council meeting on Tuesday 26 February.
The Plan for the Borough of Wellingborough replaces the Town Centre Area Action Plan (2009) and Wellingborough Local Plan (1999-2004) and will support the sustainable development and growth of Wellingborough up to 2031. Along with the North Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy it will form the basis for determining planning applications in the borough.
Wellingborough is the first authority to adopt a part two local plan in Northamptonshire. Residents had the opportunity to share their views throughout the process of producing the plan at various stages of public consultation and the draft was submitted to government in January 2018 for consideration. Having been fully examined by an independent Planning Inspector, the final plan has now been approved by councillors.
Following the adoption of the Plan for the Borough of Wellingborough, the local plan for the borough is now made up of two separate documents:
• Part 1: The North Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy (JCS); and
• Part 2: The Plan for the Borough of Wellingborough (PBW).
The JCS covers Wellingborough, East Northamptonshire, Kettering and Corby and sets out the overall spatial strategy for the whole of North Northamptonshire. The PBW takes forward the policies of the JCS giving more local detail about specific sites and policies for development specifically within the town of Wellingborough and its surrounding villages.
Leader of the Borough Council of Wellingborough, Cllr Martin Griffiths, said: “It is excellent news for our borough that councillors have agreed to adopt the local plan. It will support the sustainable expansion of Wellingborough while protecting the integrity of surrounding villages and countryside.
“The plan seeks to support opportunities for all types of housing, including older person accommodation and self build. This will help us to achieve quality growth and at the same time ensure our town continues to grow and remembers our heritage, and is a community we can all be proud of.
