Borough Council of Wellingborough

Taxi safety at Christmas

Published Wednesday, 12 December 2018

With Christmas and New Year celebrations here, it is a good time to start thinking about how you might get home from seasonal celebrations.

Make sure you get home safely by pre-booking your taxi before going out or by using an official taxi rank.

You should be aware of potential unlicensed vehicles claiming to be legitimate taxi and private hire services. The council is therefore urging passengers to always look for the official licence plate on the back of a vehicle and in the front windscreen before getting inside.  All licensed drivers should be wearing their ID badge.

People are reminded not to flag down private hire vehicles, as they are not permitted to pick up un-booked fares. Only traditional black Hackney Carriages and yellow saloon vehicles with a taxi roof sign can be flagged down to pick up un-booked fares from the roadside. Private Hire vehicles should have a clearly visible door sign stating “PRIVATE HIRE VEHICLE ADVANCED BOOKINGS ONLY”. Private hire drivers who accept fares without any pre-booking are not only committing an offence but also putting passengers at risk, as their insurance may be invalid if involved in an accident.
