22/08/2011As a Category One responder the Borough Council of Wellingborough has seven duties under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004. The duties are implemented as follows:

  1. The Northamptonshire Emergency Plan ensures that Category One responders in Northamptonshire can continue to perform their functions in the event of an emergency, so far as is reasonably practical (based on: HM Government, Emergency Preparedness)
  2. Category One responders co-operate with other responding organisations in Northamptonshire through the Local Resilience Forum (LRF) which acts as a strategic co-ordinating group. The LRF ensures that the key requirements of the Civil Contingencies Act are implemented across relevant agencies in Northamptonshire and addresses civil protection issues.
  3. The Northamptonshire Community Risk Register shows the outcome of risk assessments for the likely causes of incidents or emergencies in Northamptonshire.
  4. The Borough Council of Wellingborough's role in local emergency planning is also to share information with other local responders.
  5. At the Borough Council of Wellingborough we have our own business continuity arrangements. For reasons of security the Council choses not to publish its Business Continuity Plan. However, top tips and guidance are available on this process.
  6. Wellingborough's businesses are encouraged to undertake business continuity planning. Information from the Chartered Management Institute (2006) found that "80 per cent of businesses affected by a major incident either never re-open or close within 18 months".
  7. Residents of Wellingborough can find out about incidents or emergencies through the local media.
