Conservation Areas

Conservation areas are places which are desirable to preserve as a result of special architectural or historic interest.

A full explanation of conservation areas can be found on the English Heritage website.

Conservation Area Appraisal (CAA)

The aim of which is to preserve and enhance the character and appearance of the designated area - and to provide a basis for making sustainable decisions about its future through the development of management proposals.

Ideally, an appraisal should be prepared prior to designation; but, for many existing conservation areas, this will not have been done. Undertaking (or commissioning) an appraisal therefore offers an opportunity to re-assess the designated area and to evaluate and record its special interest.

Appraisal re-evaluates the architectural and historic fabric of the an area and identifies 'buildings of townscape merit'. It includes proposals to expand the existing Conservation Area and introduce measures to support the designation.
