Viewing the register of electors

The full register of electors is available for public inspection at our offices between 9am and 4:30pm from Monday to Friday. It is published in address order alphabetically within polling districts. We can advise on which polling districts to search for a particular street. You will be required to sign a form before being able to view the full register.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, this has to be carried out under the supervision of one the council's officers and will be for a maximum time of 30 minutes. Please call 01933 231513 to arrange this with a member of our team.

Can I search by a person's name?

No, by law you cannot search the register by name. If you have no idea of where the person is living, or used to live, you will have to search through more than 50,000 entries.

Can I make a copy of the register?

You can search through the register and take hand-written notes, but cannot make an electronic copy (such as a photograph) of the register.

Can the register be used to trace relatives?

If you call the office, confirmation can only be given if both a name and corresponding address are supplied.

You may send correspondence to the elections team, who can forward it to the elector if they are registered. All letters will be opened to ensure the content is not malicious.

You can look at old registers for research purposes, but the same rules apply in respect of supervision and taking copies. Once the register is ten years old you may take electronic copies.

Tracing long-lost friends and relatives may sometimes be done through the local press. Contact details are:
