Sustainability
Sustainable Development is about providing buildings which meet our social and economic needs whilst also protecting and enhancing our environment.
The most commonly used definition is:
"Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own need"
(World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987).
In order to achieve this, the following broad principles need to apply:
Use land efficiently
- Reuse land and buildings where possible
- Protect and enhance built heritage and biodiversity
- No development in the floodplain
- Minimise the need to travel
- Minimise energy use and waste production
- Produce good design taking into account community safety
- Provide for the community's requirements
