Our Approach to Equalities

Corporate Equalities Scheme

View pages in this section

The Council has had an equalities strategy in place for a number of years. Before the Equalities Act 2010 the strategy consisted of an Equal Opportunities Policy, and Race, Disability and Gender Equality Schemes. These were all brought together into a single Corporate Equality scheme  (CES) with a single action plan.

The original CES was published following extensive community consultation. The original document has been updated to take account of the new Equality Act and the recent restructure within the Council. The Corporate Equality Scheme and Action Plan 2012-15 will help us to improve our performance on equalities. They will ensure that we are meeting all of our statutory duties, whilst taking forward actions which will enable us to achieve equality for all people who live and work in Wellingborough.

The Scheme and Action Plan also highlight how we intend to work with and listen to our residents, how the results of these consultation exercises will feed into the development of service plans and also our commitment to the ongoing consultation and involvement which will be required to ensure that the scheme is a success.

As well as delivering high quality services to all residents, the scheme also outlines our commitment to become a model employer, meeting our varied duties in terms of recruitment and employment practices.
