Equalities - What the law says
Equalities Act 2010
The Equalities Act 2010 replaced previous anti-discrimination laws on race, disability and gender with a single Act. It simplified the law, removing inconsistencies and making it easier to understand and comply with. It also strengthened the law to help tackle discrimination and inequality.
The council must comply with the General Equality Duty giving consideration to the three aims of the Equality Duty:
- Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act.
- Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
- Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
