Standing for Election

How do I stand for election?

Most candidates for Borough Council, County Council, Parliamentary and European Parliamentary elections are nominated through a political party. However, individuals are welcome to stand in their own right.

At Parish Council elections, some candidates are nominated by political parties, but most stand as independent candidates.  For further information on becoming a parish councillor contact your local parish clerk or visit the website www.stand-and-deliver.com.

Before you can be accepted as a candidate you will need one person to agree to propose your nomination and another person to agree to second the proposal. Depending on the type of election, you may need a number of other people to act as "assentors" on your nomination paper. All of these people must be on the electoral register for the area in which you are to stand.
