The ancient Charter Market dates back to 3rd April 1201 when King John granted it to the "Abbot of Croyland and the monks serving god there" continuing "they shall have a market at Wendligburg for one day each week that is Wednesday".

In modern times the running of the market has been undertaken by the Borough Council and the number of market days has been increased. A general market is held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays with a privately run Bric-a-Brac market being held on Tuesdays. Farmers' and local produce sales are now amalgamated within the general market. Stalls are also available on other week-days, even when a general market is not being held. Usual trading hours are between 7.30 a.m. and 5.00 p.m.

Many traders have enjoyed a long association with the market and the town. Some families have traded here for over sixty years. They pride themselves in their attention to customer service and are pleased to serve.

The market sells a wide variety of goods which varies from day-to-day. Fruit and vegetables, clothing, footwear, watches, accessories, confectionery, cosmetics, books, pet products, smokers' requisites and refreshments are all usually on offer at each general market. Fresh meat, cakes, jewellery, household goods, bags and luggage, magazines and CDs are usually on offer at least once or twice a week. Bric-a-Brac, including antiques and collectables, is the speciality subject of the Tuesday market.

All shoppers and traders, whether familiar with the market already or entirely new to it, are most welcome.
