Climate Change

Our climate is changing.

Direct observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea levels all demonstrate that the Earths climate is changing.

We need to adapt our way of life so that we can prepare for the changes that are already in the climate system - for us, increased intensity of severe weather events, hot summers being extremely hot, changes in the distribution of rainfall.

Levels of carbon dioxide in the earths atmosphere are higher than they've been for over 400,000 years. The rise above "normal" carbon dioxide levels started during the past 150 to 200 years (coinciding with the industrial revolution and the increasing use of fossil fuels).

However, whether or not you believe that man-made emissions are the reason for the changing climate, we still need to adapt to the changes that are indisputably taking place, and also find ways of reducing our dependence on carbon based fuels which will, one day, run out.

The pages in this section give more information on some of the projects that the Borough Council of Wellingborough is involved in to ensure that we're prepared for what the future climate might have in store.
