Flooding: Outline
The Environment Agency operates a flood warning system, giving information to the public, media, emergency services and local Authorities.
Using the latest available technology, staff monitor rainfall, river levels and sea conditions 24 hours a day and use this information to forecast the possibility of flooding. Details of flood warnings can be found on the Environment Agency's Flood Warnings webpage.
There are many threats to the safety and health of a person during and after flooding has occurred. Floodwater can be contaminated with sewage, animal waste and other waste from drains or the surrounding area, and so could be contaminated with harmful bacteria or chemicals. Many precautions can be taken to ensure you, your family members, and friends can stay safe and protect your health during and after a flood. More information can be found on our Flooding and Health webpage.
