Trees: Outline
Trees form a vital part of the fabric of our environment. They help soften the impact of new buildings and emphasise important focal points in the townscape and landscape.
Trees on public land - The Council is responsible for the maintenance of trees on public land in the core areas of Wellingborough and Finedon. Within these areas, programmed tree work is carried out on trees situated: on the highway; in parks, open spaces and cemeteries; on industrial estates; and in closed churchyards. To report an issue with a tree in the core area, please use the online form or contact Customer Service.
Trees located on the highway - Trees located on the highway outside the core area of Wellingborough and Finedon are maintained by Northamptonshire County Council. If you wish to report a tree on private land which overhangs, is dangerous, or causes an obstruction to the highway, you will need to contact Street Doctor.
Trees on former Council housing land - Trees on former Council housing land are the responsibility of Wellingborough Homes.
Trees in village parks, open spaces and cemeteries - Trees in village parks, open spaces and cemeteries are maintained by the Parish Council.
Tree Preservation Orders or TPOs - Tree Preservation Orders or TPOs were introduced to enable Local Planning authorities to protect important trees. TPOs can be placed on any tree that has amenity value. Most trees within conservation areas are protected (see section on protected trees).
Trees on development sites - Trees are all too frequently severely damaged or killed during development. The potential for injury is not just restricted to the trunks and branches. The root systems are are also extremely vulnerable, so all building operations must be avoided beneath the crowns of trees.
Hedgerows - Hedgerows are protected by the Hedgerow Regulations (1997).
